The San Francisco Bay area has grown from a population of 5 million in 1980 to an estimated 7.756 million in 2017. The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) is made up of four counties (Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino) with an estimated population of 17 million. Case Study – Air Quality Management in Southern California, USA visualizes air quality data in these two areas so that regulators can see issues clearly and quickly, identify who is responsible for air quality, and assess the impact California’s air quality initiatives have on the community in real time. The case study shows how smart technology is being used in Southern California and how the data presented can be used to improve air quality management in these districts and expanded to other districts.
