Eighteen cities in Germany are not in compliance with air-borne pollutant standards. In most cases, this is due to high levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Both the European Union Commission and the non-governmental organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) have taken legal action against Germany for its violations, indicating a critical need to address this issue. One of the cities affected is Stuttgart. Case Study – Fine Dust Filtration in Stuttgart, Germany shows how the implementation of a smart filtration system at the Neckartor road junction in Stuttgart in 2018 has impacted fine dust pollution along the Neckartor corridor. The paper describes the pilot project, its implementation and management, and concludes with a future plan for scaling up and continuing to study how technology can be used to reduce air pollution in Stuttgart.
