Electronic waste (e-waste) is a growing problem: according to the Global E-waste Monitor 2020, around 53.6 million metric tonnes of e-waste were generated worldwide in 2019, up 21 per cent in five years. Climate change is also one of the most serious challenges faced by the global community, manifested through various natural hazards, such as flooding and hurricanes, across the globe. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) can help monitor and adapt to climate change in order to mitigate the impact of natural hazards and bring a positive impact on the environment.
The report looks at the growing challenge of e-waste and presents existing solutions for its safe disposal and use, through education, awareness, and development of adapted e-waste strategies. It also focuses on how frontier technologies, systems and applications can monitor and reduce the impact of climate change. It includes guidelines based on real-life case studies of ITU-D members worldwide, whose experiences and lessons learned can help ensure a healthier and more sustainable planet.
