Building digital skills to accelerate economic prosperity – A remarkable story of knowledge sharing and per learning from Papua New Guinea

Mr. Joseph Wotom is a farmer and a teacher. He attended digital skills and e-commerce trainings organized by the ITU in Aitape, West Sepik Province in Papua New Guinea. Inspired by the learning and realization of the value it can bring to other farmers, he shared his knowledge on e-commerce with other farmers in his village.

The training was conducted under the “Value chain support services strengthened and resilient to climate change impacts” initiative, implemented in collaboration with FAO. This initiative is part of the EU Funded “Support to Rural Entrepreneurship, Investment and Trade in Papua New Guinea” or EU STREIT PNG in short, a joint programme with FAO, ILO, ITU, UNCDF and UNDP.

Farmers such as Mr Wotom are receiving regular trainings as part of the EU-STREIT PNG Program, which is making significant investments in improving the capacities of enterprises, local entrepreneurs in agriculture as well as government and value chain stakeholders.

“I have attended Digital skills and e-commerce trainings organised by the ITU in Aitape and Vanimo last year and through knowledge gained on modern digital e-marketplace strategies during the training, I have decided to empower my farmers through trainings in ITU resource center in Aitape,” he said.

“Farmers are very excited to learn about basic computing. For e-commerce in my community, I have created e-marketplace pages for farmers on spice (Turmeric), which complements the three value chains where EU STREIT focuses. By creating an e-marketplace for farmers, I will empower all my value chain to showcase their produce online and get access to proper market. I believe it will bring increased cash right into the village and boost the living standard thereby alleviating poverty and increasing productivity,” he concluded.

To ensure future continuity and enhanced sustainability, ITU and other UN agencies work directly and closely with the government and the private sector/entrepreneurs in designing and implementing project activities.

Within this framework, the ITU has established six resource centres and conducted 19 training sessions since January 2022 on digital skills training, e-commerce, training of trainers’ programme on Network Essentials in partnership with the ITU Digital Transformation Centre located at the University of Technology, Papua New Guinea. Farmers, fishermen, SMEs, teachers, NGOs and government officials across cocoa, vanilla and fisheries value chain industries are benefitting from the digitalization initiatives under the EU STREIT programme that aims to foster digital transformation at community level in the Sepiks.
