Key Highlights

The global celebrations for Girls in ICT Day 2023 took place on 27 April in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, during the Transform Africa Summit, under the theme ‘Digital Skills for Life’.

The Handbook on mainstreaming gender in digital policies is a first-of-its-kind guide that gives insights into how we can best support policy-making processes that advocate gender equality.

Within the framework of the African Girls Can Code Initiative, knowledge sharing sessions were delivered to 11 countries: Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda.

The 10th annual EQUALS in Tech Awards recognized people and organizations working to bridge the gender digital divide around the world. Five winners were selected from 132 nominations from 54 countries around the world.

Through the ‘Tech as a driver of Women’s Economic Opportunity’ programme in cooperation with the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF), over 900 women living in rural areas of Burundi, Ethiopia and Haiti were trained to expand their economic opportunities in the textile, apparel and agricultural sectors.

Three Accessible events took place for the Americas, Arab States and Europe Regions to help address accessibility issues and support the social and economic inclusion of persons with disabilities and persons with specific needs through digital. Accessible Americas celebrated its 10th anniversary in Cuba.

Several activities were conducted on child online protection to keep children safe online:

  • trainings for children, teenagers and ICT industry,
  • a game for children called Sango’s Adventures: Discover Online Safety,
  • an app for teenagers, AskMe – Your Online Safety Friend, developed in collaboration with UNICEF,
  • and Child Online Protection guidelines were translated into Swahili, Bahasa Indonesia and its sign language, Amharic, Maltese and Uzbek, Dutch, Aymara and Quechua.

Generation Connect participated in several events across the world to advocate for youth participation and engagement in global dialogue.

A Seminar on Youth Digital Inclusion took place as part of a project in the Gran Chaco region of the Americas.
