Summary: The opportunity to use Virtual Meetings to help reduce GHG emissions across sectors and to foster the transition to Net Zero has been recognised by many parties. This Recommendation provides guidance on the assessment Virtual Meetings and events covering the net second order effect (i.e. the resulting second order effect after accounting for the emissions due to the first order effects of the Virtual Meeting or event), and the higher order effects such as rebound. More precisely this Recommendation provides: A methodology for estimating the GHG emissions related to virtual meetings and events, considering both their first order effects, their second order effects in comparison with a physical event, and higher order effects. Guidance on how to quantify and report the GHG emissions of a specific virtual meeting or event. Guidance to event organizers in determining the best approach to reduce the GHG emissions of the meetings in relation to both remote and physical participants. The recommendation will also serve as input to develop a fast and an easy-to-use emission calculator for estimating the carbon footprint of any given virtual events, including meetings and forums. This Recommendation builds on Recommendations ITU-T L.1410 and L.1480.
