Summary: ITU-T FG-QIT4N has completed its work and output several deliverables. In the FG-QIT4N D2.3, Technical Report on quantum key distribution network (QKDN) protocols part 1: Quantum layer, it gives an overall review and background of QKD protocols from standardization perspectives. It further analyses and intensifies the gap of QKD protocols standardization and further suggests to initial QKD protocols framework standardization work in SG 17. In the FG-QIT4N D2.4, Technical report on quantum key distribution network transport technologies, it introduces the transport technologies on QKD modules. In SG 17, Q15/17 (former Q4) completed the Recommendation X.1710 “Security framework for QKD networks” which laydowns the basis of QKDN security. A series of security requirements of QKDN elements have been initiated including X.1712 on key management, X.1715 on integration with secure storage network. X.sec_QKDN_tn on trusted node, X.sec_QKDN_CM on QKDN control & management, X.sec_QKDN_AA on authentication and authorization. In SG 13, several recommendations on QKDN fundamental sets have been completed, including Y.3800 “Overview on networks supporting QKDN”, Y.3801 “Functional requirements for QKDN”, Y.3802 “Functional architecture of QKDN”. Based on Y.3800 series, SG11 has initiated QKDN protocols related recommendations, including “Quantum key distribution networks – Protocol framework”, as well as specific interface protocols in classical layers in QKDN, such as Q.QKDN_CK, Q.QKDN_Kq-1, Q.QKDN_AK, Q.QKDN_Kx. QKD protocols are specially mentioned as outside the scope of study in SG 11. This WI plans to study the basic aspects of QKD protocols and form a generic framework. It aims to cover the essential items which are necessary to operate the QKD modules connected by the QKD link in the quantum layer: Overview of QKD protocols; QKD protocol architecture; and Operations of QKD protocols; Unlike the FG QIT4N D2.3.1 to give an overview of QKD protocols as information, this WI will impose basic requirements on the QKD protocols and relevant security aspects with normative languages, which will establish the QKD protocols framework. This WI will define a framework of the QKD protocols, and can further facilitate the certification of QKD modules that implement QKD protocols. Note that specific QKD protocols and QKD module implementations are outside of the scope in this WI. The interoperability between QKD transmitter and receiver is not in the scope as such interoperability needs specific QKD protocols definitions and QKD module implementations details. This WI will refer to the existing relevant Recommendations in SG13 and SG17.
