What is the “UN Virtual Worlds Day”?

The ‘UN Virtual Worlds Day’ a pioneering event presented by the ITU, World Bank, UNECE, ITCILO, UN Futures Lab Network, WMO, UNICC, WIPO, UNICEF, UN Tourism, UNU, UNDPPA, UNIN, United Nations Guatemala, FAO, UNESCWA, UNFCCC and its interagency initiative Resilience Frontiers and UNRISD.

What is the objective?

The objective of the first UN Virtual Worlds Day was to highlight the transformative power of virtual worlds, including the metaverse and spatial computing, to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This was achieved by bringing together policymakers to discuss how to regulate and safeguard the virtual worlds and metaverse, and by showcasing the latest technological advances such as VR, AR, metaverse and spatial computing, and their real-world applications relevant to the SDGs.

When and Where did the UN Virtual Worlds Day take place?

The first UN Virtual Worlds Day was held at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, on 14 June 2024.

Who can participate and attend the UN Virtual Worlds Day

The first UN Virtual Worlds Day was open to all interested parties.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee comprised the representatives of the UN entities that contributed to help shape the programme and draft the highlights of the UN Virtual Worlds Day . The committee worked through electronic means and held conference calls as required.
