SG4 - New ITU standard to allow the timely detection of interference sources and to cease unacceptable interference
2014-10-14

ITU-R has just approved Recommendation ITU-R S.2062-0 – “Carrier identification system for digital-modulation transmissions of fixed-satellite service occasional use carrier earth station transmissions using geostationary-satellite networks in the 4/6 GHz and 11-12/13/14 GHz FSS bands”.

This Recommendation provides two possible methods of providing a carrier identification system for digital-modulations of fixed-satellite service (FSS) occasional use (OU) carrier earth station transmissions from a fixed point to geostationary-satellite orbit space stations in the 4/6 GHz and 11-12/13/14 GHz FSS bands to facilitate the rapid identification of an interference source and reduce the time required to eliminate the interference that occurs unintentionally.

Method A inserts the Carrier-ID as a Network Information Table (NIT) frame in the original carrier. Method B embeds the Carrier-ID in a low rate spread spectrum carrier which is overlaid on the original carrier. These methods are applied for OU FSS earth station transmissions, which often require changes in earth station antenna pointing, frequency, power level, polarization sense, carrier bandwidth and modulation technique, to allow the timely detection of interference sources and to cease unacceptable interference.

Carrier ID is an important topic for the satellite community and there are a large number of initiatives currently being undertaken to introduce Carrier ID in satellite systems. This would support the efforts which are currently being undertaken to reduce cases of interference. An example of the use of Carrier ID was at the World Cup in Brazil.
