Provisional governmental Bureau nominates candidate for the Presidency of the Preparatory Committee
At its meeting of 10 June 2004, the provisional governmental Bureau of the Tunis phase nominated Ambassador Janis Karklins
from Latvia as candidate for the Presidency of the Preparatory Committee. The final decision on the Presidency of the
Preparatory Committee of the Tunis phase will be taken at the first Plenary of PrepCom-1 in Hammamet.

PrepCom-1 in Hammamet - Welcome Service at the International Airport
From 21 to 27 June 2004, the Tunisian government will operate a Welcome Service for all registered participants of
PrepCom-1 at the Tunis International Airport providing transport by bus to the hotels in Yasmine
Hammamet. Therefore on arrival at Tunis airport, please look out for the WSIS Welcome Service of the host country.

PrepCom-1 in Hammamet - Civil society meeting on 23 June 2004
The Conference of NGOs (CONGO) is working with the Executive Secretariat and the
Tunisian hosts of the WSIS to reserve most of 23 June in Hammamet for civil society meetings. CONGO is also organizing an
orientation session on 23 June 2004, from 1000 to 1830 hours, in the Medina Conference Center of Yasmine Hammamet to give
all participants from civil society and NGOs the necessary background information on the preparatory process of the Tunis
phase of WSIS. You will need your badge to access the orientation
session. The program of the meeting is posted on the CONGO
website.
On 23 June 2004 in the evening, the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Union Humaniste will organize, in cooperation with
the Goethe Institue in Tunis, a panel discussion on WSIS, at the Goethe-Institut Tunis, Place d’Afrique, 6, rue du Sénégal, 1002 Tunis-Belvédère. For more information, go

ITU Role in WSIS Confirmed
The ITU Council, the annual governing body, has passed a resolution
reaffirming ITU's leading managerial
role in the executive secretariat of the Summit and its preparatory process. ITU will continue to focus on areas,
activities and issues that are relevant to its mandate.

ITU WSIS Thematic Meeting on Countering Spam
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is organizing an ITU WSIS Thematic Meeting on Countering Spam from 7 to 9
July 2004, in Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting is open to Member States of
ITU and Member States of the United
Nations, international organizations, ITU Sector Members, and to WSIS accredited NGOs, civil society and business
entities, as well as to media. Regularly updated information about the event, including a draft agenda, can be found at
the ITU website.

UNESCO’s WSIS Action Directory launched
UNESCO’s WSIS Action
Directory, an online platform providing access to information on UNESCO’s contribution to the
implementation of the Plan of Action adopted by the World Summit on the Information Society in December 2003 has been
launched.
