The Hon. Charlot Salwai Tabimasmas (MP) – Prime Minister of the Republic of Vanuatu and Minister responsible for ICT, Telecommunication and Broadcasting

The Hon. Charlot Salwai Tabimasmas, Prime Minister of the Republic of Vanuatu, has an extensive background in finance and accounting. He began his career as an Accountant with the electricity company, UNELCO, followed by several executive posts in the banking sector and in State-Owned Enterprises.

His political career began in the early 1990s, with his appointment to the post of Secretary to the Council of Ministers, where he served for almost six years. He then served briefly as Political Adviser in various Government Ministries in the late 1990s to early 2000s. This broadened the scope of his political knowledge and experience in many areas, making him an important figure as he backed his former Party leaders during those years. He worked closely with communities in his place of birth, Pentecost Island, as he gradually begun to establish his political base there, assisted by his senior party colleagues and friends. He contested the 2002 General Election, winning a seat in the Pentecost Constituency representing the community of Central Pentecost; he was re-elected to Parliament four times, and was nominated for Ministerial portfolios on several occasions.

Following his victory in the 2016 snap Election, he was elected Prime Minister of the Republic of Vanuatu on 11 February 2016. He currently leads the coalition Government made up of eight political parties, representing a significant majority of new Parliamentarians committed to the pursuit of change and stability.

The Government led by the Hon. Charlot Salwai Tabimasmas has recently celebrated its third anniversary, and continues to pursue its plans as projected since its establishment.
