HAKOM Celebrated "International Girls in ICT Day"

"International Girls in ICT Day" is celebrated on April 28." As the project holder in the Republic of Croatia, HAKOM organized a round table in order to discuss the importance of education and promotion in the field of information and communication technology starting from an early age through the education system and through additional extra-curricular activities aimed to encourage many girls to direct their profession in the area of information - communication technologies.

ZAGREB, April 27, 2017 - The International Girls in ICT day was celebrated this Thursday, April 27, in Zagreb, and the central event - a round table " - the importance of education from an early age ", was organized by the Croatian Regulatory Authority for Network Industries (HAKOM), as the project holder in the Republic of Croatia.

Tihe meeting was attended by Mr. Tomislav Madžar, special advisor to the President of the Republic of Health and Sports. and special envoy of Kolinda Grabar – Kitarović, President of the Republic of Croatia.

After the welcome speech given by Mr. Dražen Lučić, the President of the Council at HAKOM, Ms. Višnja Ljubičić, Ombudswoman for Gender Equality opened the discussion. The discussion particularly focused on the industry in the promotion of the ICT sector among young people and on the guidelines that will help the society to encourage young people (girls) to choose a career in the ICT sector..During the discussion, special emphasis was put on the role of the industry in promoting the ICT sector among young people highlighting the guidelines for the society to encourage young people to consider their career in the ICT sector.

The participants in the round table were the following: Maja Matijašević( (Faculty of Engineering and Computing in Zagreb - FER), Marija Boban (Faculty of Law, University of Split), Anđelka Strajher (President of the Megatrenda Board) and Željka Knezović (IT consultant at Mobendo), discussing the opportunities within the education in ICT area ,the ways of promoting the ICT from the early years and examples of good and bad practice.

The celebration of the "International Girls in ICT Day" was launched by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and is being implemented in more than 140 countries worldwide. The objective is to reduce the difference in the number of employed women compared to men in the ICT sector, thereby simultaneously alleviating the issue of insufficient number of ICT experts around the world. The International Girls in ICT is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in April each year.
