DOT Rwanda - Bridging the Gender Digital Divide in Africa: Webinar with The Mastercard Foundation

4/27/2017

Africa, Rwanda, Kigali, Kigali City, Rwanda

Young people are using technology to access information, earn a living and engage with the world around them. However, the digital divide in Africa means 71 percent of girls and young women remain offline.

The MasterCard Foundation hosted a Google Chat to celebrate International Girls in ICT Day. This event recognizes five exceptional young women who are bridging the digital divide and using technology to improve economic opportunities for themselves and their communities.

  • Aongola Musowafu, a third-year nursing student in Zambia, will discuss how ChildFund's blended-learning program has enabled her to study nursing.
  • Colette Nyinawumuntu, Digital Opportunity Trust's Research and Gender Officer, will share how training young women in digital entrepreneurship and leadership is transforming communities in Rwanda.
  • Regina Honu, the CEO of Soronko Solutions, who was featured as one of CNN's inspirational women who rock STEM, talks about opening the first coding and human-centred design school for children and young adults in Africa.
  • Kawira Thambu, Lead Learning Designer at Arifu, shares how they are digitizing educational content for those in the agricultural, business, and financial education sectors.
  • Peris Bosire, Founder of FarmDrive, will talk about an innovative digital model being led by girls to improve financial inclusion for the disadvantaged in Kenya.
All of these women are leading new and robust pathways for disadvantaged young women to access digital tools and skills that will help create more opportunities for them. Join us to learn how ICT equity can be achieved in Africa.
