A Two-Day International Workshop

on

“Girls in ICT Day”

6th & 7th April, 2017

A two-day international workshop on “Girls in ICT Day” was held at VIT University, Chennai campus on 6th and 7th April, 2017, to highlight the relevance of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for the betterment of girl children from their school days.

Girls in ICT Day, an initiative backed by  ITU aims to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider career in the growing field of ICTs, enabling both girls and technology companies to reap the benefits of greater female participation in the ICT sector.

50 girl students from different schools – Government High school- Kandigai, Rathnamangalam, Kulappakam located in three different villages near our campus participated in the workshop.

The workshop commenced with a formal Inaugural session at 09.30 am. The Chief Guest of the inaugural event, Dr. Tharani Parthiban, Medical officer, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, stated her own example of hailing from rural background and rising to a prominent professional career aided by technology. She sensitized the participants on self-hygiene and health issues.

Dr. P. Gunasekaran, Pro-vice Chancellor, VIT University, Chennai delivered the special address, and stressed upon the need among girl students to upgrade in digital technology with devotion and dedication.    

Dr. P. K. Manoharan, Additional Registrar, VIT University, Chennai felicitated the gathering and said that there is an urgent need to enable girl children to use Information and communication technology, so that their overall progress is assured.

Dr. V. Vijayakumar, Associate Dean, School of Computing Science & Engineering (SCSE), VIT University, Chennai felicitated the dignitaries. Dr. E. Umamaheswari welcomed the gathering. 

Prof. M. Priyaadharshini proposed the vote of thanks.

The workshop ran over 2 days and consisted of 7 sessions. The various sessions include Graphics and Video, Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Internet and Social Networks, Women’s Security in Cyber Space, Career Guidance, Self Employment and Government Schemes for women. These sessions were organised for the girls with hands on training. The food and the conveyance for these two days were completely taken care of by the University.

DAY 1

Session I: Videos and Graphics

For today’s classroom, nothing is more essential to successful teaching and learning than strategy-based instruction. It is through the use of specific teaching strategies and learning tools that students can be more successful learners. Videos and Graphics hands on session was handled by Prof. Priyaadarshini, Assistant Professor(Sr), School of Computing Science & Engineering, VIT University Chennai.

Session II: Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is important because it is the basic spreadsheet program used in Windows, which means a large number of computers in the world use it. To create a simple spreadsheet to analyze data, To make charts and diagrams to represent mathematical data, To use simple formulas in a spreadsheet, Dr. Reshmi T R, Associate Professor, School of Computing Science & Engineering, VIT University Chennai handled a hands on session on Microsoft Excel.

Session III: Microsoft Office

Microsoft Word is an essential tool for any individual in today’s digital age. With the help of MS Word, student can write letters, documents, mails etc.,; can create text with large volume; can import files or objects from other programs and use them in our documents. Training on Microsoft word with hands on session was handled by Dr. Hepsiba Mabel , Associate Professor, School of Computing Science & Engineering, VIT University Chennai.

DAY2

Session V: Microsoft Office Power Point

With the proper PowerPoint skills students can create compelling presentations that will help prepare them for life after school. Microsoft powerpoint hands on session was handled by Dr. Umamaheswari E, Associate Professor, School of Computing Science & Engineering, VIT University Chennai that includes Presentation basics, Creating your title slide, Adding new slides, Adding bulleted text, Changing slide layouts, Inserting clip art and images, Hyper linking to other slides, Slide designs, colours and backgrounds, Basic animations etc.

Session VI: Digital World

Dr. Asnath Victy Phamila, Associate Professor, School of Computing Science & Engineering handled a session on Digital World, that includes usage of Internet for online booking, creating mails, online results, online shopping etc..

Session VII: Career Guidance: Dr. Karmel A

Career guidance is a very important aspect of students life. Career guidance is very essential for success. If a student want to see her career moving in a right direction then career guidance is of utmost importance. If you have a pre-planned guidance for your career then it can make a lot of difference. Awareness about career guidance was handled by Dr. Karmel A, Associate Professor, School of Computing Science & Engineering, VIT University Chennai that include, planning the future, bring clear sight of the goal, beat the competition more easily, etc..

Session VII: Technical Event

Various technical events were conducted by Prof. Priyaadarshini, Assistant Professor (Sr), School of Computing Science & Engineering, VIT University Chennai.

Session VIII: Personality Development


Special session on personality development was delivered by Dr. Jc. R. Subhashini, Junior Chamber International India Certified Trainer, Chennai. The students were motivated with her speech. The students have learnt the potential impacts that computers and Information Technology could play in shaping their future along with personality development.

The workshop was concluded with a valedictory function head by Dr. P. Gunasekaran, Pro-Vice Chancellor, VIT University Chennai, Dr. P. K. Manoharan, Additional Register, VIT University Chennai, Dr. V. Vijayakumar, Associate Dean, School of Computing Science & Engineering, VIT University Chennai, and the chief guest Dr. Jc. R. Subhashini, Junior Chamber International India Certified Trainer, Chennai.

The students were given certificates, attractive prizes and complements during the valedictory function. Certificates were  distributed by Dr. P. K. Manoharan, Additional Register, VIT University Chennai

This year we enrolled 50 students for this workshop. If we were given the chance of hosting it the next year, we would definitely expand our horizons to accommodate 100 more girls. We believe that these two days were very fruitful and informative for the participants.
