e-Business Life Communication Limited in Collaboration with New Horizons Nigeria

As part of activities to mark the International Girls in ICT Day 2017 organised by eBusiness Life Communication Limited, students from participating schools had to take part in an App Development competition that was expected to produce three winners.

The Competition, held in partnership with New Horizons Nigeria, an IT institute which trained the students on basic App development, took place on May 18, 2017.

The students were given three-hour crash training on App development using App Inventor software was and subsequently a competition set. Performance of the students showed the potential inherent in the young students. Only SS1 (equivalent of grade 10) students participated in the competition.

After the training which was undertaken by New Horizons instructor, the competition commenced. The Assignment was: “Create an App that welcomes the user to your school. Create six buttons with a table arrangement with each saying two words about your school.”

Each of the schools succeeded in creating an App that that announced the school to visitors. Baptist Girls High School won the keenly coveted first position.

After the competition, each of the students got a copy of the book “App Inventor 2” for creating Android Apps. New Horizons also impacted a course that would have cost thousands of naira, knowledge of App development using App inventor. 18 students from 8 schools participated in the training while the competition had two students representing each school.

Although some of the students have had a hands-on practice in using ICT tools, the training was an eye-opener for them. According to the students, the training stirred up the quest to engage in further studies on ICT innovations.

Organising the training and competition by eBusiness Life Limited was meant to bridge a digital gap in some of these schools and encourage the school administrations to continue in that stead.

The students and accompanying teachers were treated with refreshment after the competition.
