Packhorses wait as a team builds a tower on Kheki, a peak in beautiful and remote Tusheti in the Greater Caucasus Mountains in the Republic of Georgia. The tower is part of a solar-powered wireless network bringing broadband to Tusheti. Tremendous difficulties were had due to the terrain and unwieldy loads that had to be transported on horseback. A joint effort between several organizations including the Internet Society, Small & Medium Telecom Operators Association, the Tusheti Development Fund and Freenet, the project aims to support Tushetians’ ability to build economic opportunities while preserving their heritage, traditions, and ways of life.
