ITU/WSIS

Session 463

Thursday, 6 April 2023 14:00–15:30 (UTC+02:00) ICTs and Sports WSIS TalkX

In celebration of the UN International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

For children, no line exists between their online and offline experiences and while sports organizations play an important role in many children’s lives, the opportunities they offer and the risks they must mitigate, cannot be considered separate from digital technology. Today, sports organizations use digital tools for an array of purposes which can expose children to various online risks. The role of sports organizations in addressing these issues is pivotal, and their engagement with children and their communities is significant. In celebration of the UN International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP), experts from the sports sector, NGOs, UN and children themselves, will discuss opportunities for collaboration to leverage the power of sports for children's development, well-being, and protection online.

The virtual WSIS panel will enable discussions around leveraging on the power of sports to increase child online safety awareness through sports organisations and sporting activities. At the same time, it will enable strategies to enhance online safeguarding in sports to better protect children from violence, exploitation, abuse, and other harmful practices online and offline in the sports sector without compromising their right to play.
