Exploring how GenAI impacts educators globally based on a small-scale research paper

Generative AI in Education: research among MBA in Educational Leadership students and alumni

Following my work on online projects aimed at educational equity during the COVID-19 pandemic (Global Teens MeetUps WSIS Champion Project), the rise of emerging technologies made me wonder whether Generative AI (GenAI) could help make education more equitable and impactful. I conducted a small-scale research project as part of the Curriculum Design and Implementation Course at MBA in Educational Leadership (MEL) program under Mark Curcher’s supervision at Tampere University of Applied Sciences in Finland.

Twenty-five educators participated in the survey and three educators were interviewed for this mixed-method research study. These educators are located all over the world, bringing diverse perspectives. Some of the questions covered in the research include: Does GenAI have the potential to streamline educators’ tasks, resulting in positive impacts on education as a whole? What do educators think about GenAI? How do they apply it, and what is the impact?

Highlighting real-life applications of GenAI in education can spark meaningful conversations among all stakeholders, addressing various topics such as GenAI implementation, training and support, its impact on educators and teaching practices, and ethical considerations.

The main goal of this session is to share data, facilitate discussion and exchanging best practices. By highlighting the role of GenAI in education, we aim to promote cooperation for a better future. Knowledge and insights gained can serve as a starting point for discussions within educational institutions and among families and friends, raising awareness and addressing pressing issues stemming from the rapid development of GenAI.

C3. Access to information and knowledge - the nature of research meets this criteria

C7. ICT applications: benefits in all aspects of life — E-learning - many of the educators who participated in the research work online, most of them work online partially. They all went through an MBA in Educational Leadership program in the form of blended E-learning.

C8. Cultural diversity and identity, linguistic diversity and local content - All MBA in Educational Leadership (MEL) students and alumni are international educational professionals who have lived and worked across the world and yet are connected by the fundamentals of innovative Finnish education program like MEL.

C10. Ethical dimensions of the Information Society - research results indicate a need for ethical considerations and policies of AI usage in education
