Technology towards globalization of graduate education: Graduate Studies Management System (GSMS)

Description

Graduate Studies Management System (GSMS) is an innovation designed by School of Graduate Studies (SPS) to implement the use of technology in managing post-graduate students at the Institute of Malaysian Higher Education, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The aspirations of GSMS is to manage the wide spectrum of processes namely recruitment, academic, research, scholarship, examination and administration modules which aim to provide prominent postgraduates. As the number of post-graduate students is remarkably exceeding 13,000 in 2013, it is crucial for SPS to monitor their performance through a systematic and efficient administration process. GSMS’ main objective is to effectively overcome the inconvenience of previous manual system which resulted in the increase in human resources, overtime claims and printing costs. In meeting the aims of the Malaysian Higher Education, GSMS plays a vital role towards strengthening the higher education provision. As a result, during the last five years, GSMS has subsequently produced positive impacts to UTM in reducing paper and printer usage (98.4%); significant reduction in manpower (60.54%) and reduce in time consumption (57.3%). In fact, GSMS induced further increase in financial income to UTM from the admission fees with a total of USD 1.58 million, which helps UTM to elevate its name as a world-class center of academic excellence. In line with such achievements, GSMS has successfully broadened and enhanced the Malaysian Higher Education standard.
