The GINS is a “Joined-Up” infrastructure through which public sector institutions will communicate & collaborate more effectively. One of the requirements for an effective e-Government is to have a connected Government. The GINS project provides such a vehicle for creating an interconnected Government. The GINS network interconnects all Ministries and Departments within the public sector. The GINS network interconnects all Ministries and Departments within Mauritius.This project aims to enhance Ministries/Departments efficiency through the use of ICT by having faster access to email and Government Applications. The main objectives of the GINS are: To provide Email Service and Internet Access Electronic delivery of services through E-government portal Hosting of departmental applications. To establish a government-wide information infrastructure built around the Government Online Centre To improve electronic communication capability of the Public Service To promote collaboration and co-ordination within the Public Service To promote more efficient and effective government To provide round the clock e-Government ServicesTangible Benefits Savings in costs (e.g. telecommunications, hardware & software, etc)Intangible Benefits Enhanced communication & collaboration Higher level of security Catalyst to the ‘E-Government’ programme Centralised management of the GINS Infrastructure

The Government is currently in the process of replicating this project to interconnected Parastatal bodies to the Government Online Centre (GOC), setting up a parastatalNet Platform, whereby parastatal entities can connects to system being hosted at GOC though the Info Highway platform.Furthermore, a similar platform could be set up to include private companies / Banks and other institution, where by service to cross check biodata of citizen ( example authentification of a person, a person taking a loan, the bank can check upon details like National ID card of the person in the Government database to that provided)

GINS project promotes interconnection between government entities to provide a more effective and efficient service to the citizen of the Republic of Mauritius, thus an inclusive Information Society as per WSIS values as it promotes the sharing of valuable and timely information with Citizens. The GINS also encourages the usage and deployment of ICTs to create benefits in several aspects of daily life of its users.
