WSIS Prizes Contest 2019 Nominee

Republic of IoT

Description

Republic of IoT (RIoT) is a yearly program of Makestro in collaboration with Ministry of Communication and Informatics of Indonesia (KOMINFO), with one goal in mind which is to bring Indonesia's Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) makers and products to the next level.

RIoT facilitates idea generation and prototype development through hackathon or challenges, enriching knowledge through seminars and hands-on labs, and channel the makers to the startup incubation programs. RIoT 2017 and 2018 managed to facilitate the development of more than 100 IoT + AI product prototypes, bring the makers to ASEAN level, and channel 30 maker teams to be incubated by incubation programs. Road to RIoT (pre-RIoT events) has visited 12 cities across 811 / 2048 Indonesia, reaching no less than 3000 makers.

Replicability

Republic of IoT (RIoT) program is easily replicable to any countries since there's huge demand in products and solutions around Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence, now and in the future. In many countries, especially the developing ones, there's challenge to adopt the technology due to scarcity of human resources, local startups/business, technology providers, knowledge/best practices and success stories, and infrastructure in general around IoT + AI. Such program can be used to kickstart the awareness of IoT + AI, maker movement, R&D of products/solutions also startups/business creation around IoT, and eventually the adoption of IoT + AI in many use cases.

Sustainability

IoT + AI are here to stay, and we can find many mind-blowing predictions of how huge IoT will be adopted in the future, how AI will change our life. The demand of such solutions enabled by IoT + AI will be increasing exponentially. By that, it's crucial to keep nurturing the ecosystem, to maintain the balance of supply and demand. The Program such RIoT is important to keep spawning the supply (the makers, products and solutions, startups) and in the process will increase the trust in the marketplace to eventually create more demands.

WSIS values promotion

Republic of IoT (RIoT) program is reflecting almost all WSIS Action Lines and inline with many SGD goals.
