WSIS Prizes Contest 2021 Nominee

she codes; activity

Description

she codes; is the community of female software engineers in Israel. It was established in 2013 by Ruth Polachek with a goal of reaching 50% female software engineers in the Israeli hi-tech industry. Our purpose is to improve women’s careers and livelihood, as well as to achieve a crucial balance in the hi-tech industry, which currently has a mere 22% female representation among software developers and 33% in the industry overall. she codes; takes action to achieve this goal by conducting quality training that allows women to land jobs and advance in the hi-tech industry. The she codes; community has over 50,000 members, taking part in educational technology activities in over 50 branches across Israel, as well as in all universities, tech hubs and leading tech companies, such as Google, IBM, Facebook, Intel and Amazon. she codes; offers Israeli women hands-on professional training, in order to fill the gap between male and female software engineers. Women are given the opportunity to embark on a software development career, while those who are already engaged in the industry are being offered continuing education. The community includes women of all ages from different geographic locations and population groups, including Jewish Ultra-Orthodox, Israeli Arabs and Druze. she codes; aims to expose these women to the ever-advancing tech industries and develop their leadership skills. With its broad social and geographical outreach, she codes; has true potential to reach any woman in Israel interested in technology. she codes; puts an emphasis on programming languages that are in high demand in the Israeli market, on self-learning in study groups as is common in tech companies, and allows each participant to fulfill a meaningful role in the organization and inspire others.

Replicability

"Thanks to its simple and scalable model, since being launched 6 years ago, she codes; has grown exponentially. Starting with one branch hosted by one company, today we have over 50 branches, and many more are on the way. she codes; executive team is structured in such a way that enables constant development and expansion. We have two VPs who oversee the branches. They manage district managers (deployed geographically), who manage regional managers (deployed by district regions), who manage branch managers, who manage the branch's staff. This structure allows new branches to develop very easily and efficiently, while each team member oversees a specific field. The process of opening new branches is highly standardized, and the steps needed to be taken are well established. New team members continue to join, while experienced team members get promoted to higher positions. This system is structured in accordance with the industry's characteristics. We open the enrollment to our courses every 2-3 month, with over 2,000 applicants each time. The whole process is managed by our wonderful team members, while taking in thousands of new students every year. Our aspirations are growing together with the organization, and we have plans to reach every girl and woman who wishes to learn coding and be part of the community. At this pace, we will soon achieve our goal.

Sustainability

Women are given the opportunity to embark on a software development career, while those who are already engaged in the industry are being offered continuing education. Furthermore, she codes; offers educational programs for women from various population groups, who strive to expand their technical skills and knowledge, and collaborate with other female software developers. The she codes; community strives to reach all women in Israel interested in technology. The community includes women of all ages from different geographic locations and population groups, including Jewish Ultra-Orthodox, Israeli Arabs and Druze. she codes; aims to expose these women to the ever-advancing tech industries and develop their leadership skills.

WSIS values promotion

Through a variety of activities conducted year-round by she codes;, participants interact with many talented professionals already working in the industry. This method helps overcome employment barriers, such as gender or lack of a relevant academic degree. In addition, she codes; branches are located at leading hi-tech companies, such as Google, Facebook, and Amazon, where our community members study regularly. One of the major advantages of these collaborations is the networking opportunities available to the participants, both with one another and with employees at these companies. Community members are encouraged to achieve personal and professional growth not only by learning coding skills but also by assuming more responsibilities by volunteering and helping others, thereby improving their own skills. The heart of she codes; is its team of over 500 volunteers, who run dozens of branches across Israel, nationwide events, the organization’s website, and engage in many other significant endeavors. Many of the volunteers, who work in tech companies, have been promoted, in part thanks to the skills acquired by volunteering within the she codes; community.
