A long-term universal threat to social and economic development, inequity hampers poverty reduction initiatives, destroys people’s sense of fulfilment and self-worth, and stunts every human’s potential. In September 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that have the power to create a better, more equitable world by 2030.
Based on the foundational principle of reducing inequalities of all kinds, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Esri, the PVBLIC Foundation, and the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) Secretariat, have joined forces to form the SDG Data Alliance.
SDG Data Alliance will use the power of purpose-driven collaboration, globally recognized geospatial frameworks, and leading GIS technology, to accelerate achievement of the SDGs by creating SDG Data Hubs across developing nations in Latin America, Asia, and Africa. For now, we are aiming at outreach to around 30 countries.

Based on geospatial frameworks and technology, the data hubs will assist developing countries in measuring, monitoring and reporting on their progress toward reducing inequality and will empower people to ensure inclusiveness and equality.

The SDG Data Alliance will empower governments, businesses, and people to respond to and manage shared global challenges like poverty, inequality, and climate change.

These outcomes will be through the development of a monitoring and reporting structure utilizing the SDG Data Alliance, Open SDG Data Hubs in countries, allowing for the abilities for local country agencies to collaborate and educate on the SDGs through its Open SDG Data Hub, showcasing and leveraging its related capabilities and the subsequent benefits to achieve SDG 10 and the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

The project will include leveraging and strengthening the in-country expertise from geospatial experts within and across agencies and organizations leveraging the Data hub. Address national and global reporting requirements to report on the SDGs with specific focus on SDG 10. These outcomes will be through the development of a monitoring and reporting structure utilizing the SDG Data Alliance, Open SDG Data Hubs in countries, allowing for the abilities for local country agencies to collaborate and educate on the SDGs through its Open SDG Data Hub, showcasing and leveraging its related capabilities and the subsequent benefits to achieve SDG 10 and the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. Hence the project is replicable.

This plan is to develop and also support the required work in each country to establish regular structured reporting to responsible SDG agencies. Key audiences to engage in this learning effort are all responsible local government agencies covering the SDG indicators. To achieve this level of engagement project partners will work with the Country government and in-country UN agencies to establish regular learning efforts and communication on the progress of the SDG Data Alliance.

There will also be continuous knowledge and communication activities to 2030 and beyond in which the SDG Data Alliance will contribute to and engage. These include: GGIM regular meeting, UN Statistical Commission, High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), UNGA, Global, and regional and local SDG events.

SDG Data Alliance is a multi-stakeholder implementation of WSIS Action Lines and cross-cutting commitments on SDGs, especially reducing inequality, gender equality, information exchange, the sharing of best practices on SDGs and continues to provide assistance in developing multi-stakeholder and public/private partnerships to achieve the sustainable development goals.
