Digital green transformation of network infrastructure based on artificial intelligence

Description

To construct a zero-carbon green network, China Telecom builds a unified 4G/5G base station/server room smart energy-saving system based on Artifi Intelligence(AI), big data, and energy-saving control technology. Based on big data, AI, and network technology, this project carries out technological innovations such as cross-domain massive data processing, big data/AI modeling, scenario energy-saving strategy formulation, high-reliability equipment analysis and judgment, control execution, intelligent wake-up, and intelligent evaluation. Under the premise of ensuring network quality and user perception, the project realizes efficient and safe energy-saving, visualization, and monitoring and dispatching of 4/5G base stations/server rooms across the entire network. This technology solves the pain points of traditional energy-saving solutions, such as inefficiency, high operational risk, heavy maintenance workload, limited application scale, and invisible energy saving, etc.

The project has achieved remarkable results:this project has covered Millions of 4/5G base stations and thousands of server rooms in 2022. The energy-saving efficiency of 5G base station equipment reaches 16%, the overall average daily energy-saving rate of server room reaches 4~9%, and the overall energy-saving rate of the refrigeration system is more than 23%. China Telecom saves 6.5 billion kWh of electricity and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 390,000 tons per year.

In the future, China Telecom will further further improve system capabilities, expand energy-saving scenarios, enhance multi-mode energy-saving technologies to construct a new green network. Through the innovation of green network, the project actively promotes the deployment of AI energy-saving technology, establishes AI energy-saving related standard and specification system, and guides upstream equipment manufacturers to jointly develop the green ecological chain.

Replicability

The following aspects can prove the replicability of the project:
1) The technical framework of the project is highly open and flexible. It does not require a specific base station or server room refrigeration system and has good compatibility with a variety of energy-saving scenarios and means, strong generalization ability. The scale of base station and server room it holds and manages is industry-leading.
2) The system provides a practical solution for the realization of green and energy-saving wireless networks and data centers. The project also extends to other network facilities such as cloud network server and in-depth cooperates with companies in neighboring countries such as operators in the Philippines. It can be seen that in the field of communications, the portability of the system is obvious.
3) China Telecom's base station/server room smart energy-saving system emphasizes smart control of hardware devices based on big data and artificial intelligence technologies to create value for enterprises and society. Its technical framework has no special requirements for the hardware equipment to be controlled. Although the system was incubated in the context of base station/server room energy-saving, its technical framework can theoretically be replicated in other areas of industry.
4) China Telecom has integrated the core requirements and technical architecture of the project into telecommunications standards and exported them to ITU and ETSI(European Telecommunications Standards Institute). At present, four projects have been recognized by experts at home and abroad and have been successfully established, which fully proves the replicability of the project and is expected to be popularized to countries all over the world in the future.

Sustainability

The following points reflect the sustainability of the project:
1)According to China Telecom’s “Dual Carbon” Action Plan, by the end of 2025, China Telecom will construct millions of 5G base stations and thousands of large data centers, AI will enable 5G base stations with energy saving efficiency no less than 20%, the proportion of large and ultra-large green data centers is more than 80%, and the PUE of the newly-built data center is less than 1.3. As an essential part of China Telecom’s “dual carbon” action plan, the project has already provided energy-saving analysis and intelligent control services for millions of 4/5G base stations and thousands of server rooms in over 300 cities in China, and it will cover more 4/5G base stations and server rooms by 2025.In addition, we will deepen our cooperation with overseas companies in the future to extend the project to other countries and regions.
2) In terms of economic benefits, the project can bring a significant reduction in operating costs for enterprises such as telecom operators. At present, it is mainly reflected in the saving of electricity charges. The system can be sold to other enterprises as EPC (Energy Performance Contracting) services, and operators can get a certain proportion of the saved energy costs, so as to achieve mutual benefit and win-win. In addition, China has established a national unified carbon emission trading market, which is expected to reach more than 100 billion in the future. The project is expected to help telecom operators enter the carbon trading market and create certain profits.
3) In terms of technology, big data and artificial intelligence technologies are the core of this project and have been initially applied on a large scale. In the future, this project will continue to iterate on technology, use artificial intelligence and other technologies to alleviate the contradiction between industrial development and environmental governance and achieve the goal of harmony between human development and environmental ecology.

WSIS values promotion

Climate change and energy issues are a global challenge that crosses borders. To meet these challenges the ICT industry is responding to the Paris Agreement and taking positive action. As a practical solution, the green and low-carbon network, guided by the concept of sustainable development of ecological civilization, reduces the power and energy consumption of the network through various means such as technological innovation, institutional innovation and industrial transformation. This reduces the energy consumption of the network, and thus cutting greenhouse gas emissions, which finally leads to a win-win situation for both industrial development and environmental management. Specifically, in China, China Telecom’s base station/server room smart energy-saving system has saved 650 million kWh of electricity, equivalent to a reduction of 390,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Such an great contribution to environment management is in line with WSIS's Action Lines of enabling environment and the sustainable development goals.
