5G Intelligent Energy-Saving Platform

Description

The project aims to solve the problem of 5G high energy consumption, decrease operating costs, reduce carbon emissions, and help build a network with better energy-saving and performance, so as to achieve sustainable and high-quality development.
* the relevance of the project to the respective WSIS Action Line
The project aims to solve the problem of 5G high energy consumption, so as to promote the implementation process of energy conservation and emission reduction in the communication fields. The project conforms with the WSIS Action Line - "Enabling environment".
* the results achieved and impact generated
The project has been deployed and applied in more than 20 provinces in China since 2020. Until 2021, a total of 1.13 million 5G base stations have been accessed, saving 1.49 billion KWH of electricity. Equivalent to a reduction of carbon emissions of about 405,280 tons.
* relevance to Sustainable Development Goals
The project achieves unified scheduling of 5G network energy-saving strategies through big data and AI technology. It is committed to reducing the energy consumption of 5G base stations, and building a green network with both energy efficiency and superior performance, which is consistent with the sustainable development goal.
* ability of the model to be replicated
The project introduced a flexible hierarchical architecture of micro-services, designed a unified API interface for network indicator collection and the API interface for energy-saving command execution. This project fully considered the needs of replicability and easy promotion.
* sustainability of project
Energy conservation and emission reduction are the key means to cope with rising temperatures in global environmental governance. In the context, the project aims to solve the high-power consumption problem of 5G network, so as to promote the implementation process of energy conservation and emission reduction in the communication fields. Therefore, this project has good sustainability.

Replicability

Based on the consideration of large-scale application and replicable promotion, this project designs a vertical hierarchical architecture of network energy-saving micro-service. The architecture consists of "collection – perception – analysis - decision - execution", which could realize flexible deployment of components with customization capabilities and meet the differentiated requirements in disparate users. This project obtains network indicators from operators through unified data acquisition API interface. Meanwhile, the project uses big data technology and artificial intelligence algorithm to mine energy-saving space and time in order to match the optimal energy-saving technology. Eventually, the project sends energy-saving strategy via the standard command execution API. This project has been applied in more than 20 provinces in China on a large scale. The IT technology adopted is universal and reproducible.

Sustainability

Global environmental governance is facing unprecedented difficulties. Energy conservation and emission reduction are the key means to cope with rising temperatures in global environmental governance. China has scheduled to reach the goal of peaking carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 (the two-carbon goal) in its development strategy. In the field of communication, the issue of high-power consumption of 5G network has been the focus of the industry, hence the large-scale commercial use of 5G will put pressure on environmental protection and enterprise operations. This project is committed to solving the problem of high-power consumption of 5G network, so as to build a green network with both energy efficiency and superior performance, which facilitates the large-scale commercial use of 5G network. The project team plans the phased direction and objectives. At the present stage, the project achievements have been applied and deployed on a large scale in China Mobile's 5G construction, and great progress has been made in energy saving and cost reduction. In the future, with the continuous development and application of site-level and network-level energy saving technologies, the project will continue to update and iteration, which has good sustainability.

WSIS values promotion

This project commits to building 5G network with both energy efficiency and superior performance. We help operators realize energy conservation and emission reduction, thereby reducing costs. On the other hand, this project also drives the attention and implementation of the entire communication industry in energy conservation and emission reduction, which promotes the sustainable development of communication industry. It sets a digital and green benchmark for global ecological protection.
