Free and Independent Analysis and Awarding for Government Social Media

Government Social Media Award

Description

As of June 2022, Indonesia ranked fourth among the countries with the highest number of social media users worldwide (Statista, 29 June 2022). Reaching out to more than 210 million active users in Indonesia, social media stands out as one of the most effective communication tools for government—providing official, accurate, and unbiased information for everyone and free.

The use of social media by government to deliver information to the public has to be well-executed and always-improving. To do so, the challenge is to assess, evaluate, and determine the best practices.

The project, namely GSM Award, is designed and run to address said challenge. Each year since 2019, GSM Award has collected more than 6 million social media data, analysed, and ranked it. With each year, there are evidences that the use of social media by Indonesian government improves, both qualitatively and quantitatively.

GSM Award is one of the programs run by GSMS (Government Social Media Summit), a collaboration hub for government social media practitioners in Indonesia. The project is run independently, free of charge, and in cooperation with several government and civil society entities.

Replicability

The project replicability is already proven as it has already been replicated in different project, that is a social media awarding for Indonesian embassies all over the world since 2020.

Some factors that make the project replicable:
1. Uses basic social media metrics and NLP technology to collect data
2. A standardized analysis and evaluation is then applied to the data
3. For replicability in other countries, NLP can either be dismissed or developed

Sustainability

The main reason of the project sustainability is the commitment of partner entities to always sponsor the project.

Other option to support the project sustainability is to provide the mechanism and management for similar awarding. Another program within the GSMS (project's entity) has already been planned.

WSIS values promotion

Social media is one of the most growing ICT in Indonesia. It covers and affects personal and national level, entertainment and research activity, spiritual and political world, etc. The good and bad of everything is amplified. Aligned with WSIS values, the project will strengthen the role of ICT to maintain free, open, and good information for the public, and in the end to enhance the development of all governance sector.
