Concrete is the second most used substance in the world after water. We use it in wide ranging areas of our lives and livelihoods. While a lot of studies and interventions pertaining to the harmful effects of carbon emissions on human and biological lives regarding, few, if any, have considered the effects such emissions pose to concrete structures that we rely on for shelter, transportation and other important areas of our lives. Within the field of structural engineering, there are many types and causes of concrete deterioration. However, the impact of carbonation leading to embedded weakening the concrete is sparingly investigated. Our project employs study a microwave sensor combined with artificially intelligent units to design an intelligent system for real time, invasive detection of carbonation attacks on concrete structures with the aim of providing necessary information for timely interventions to mitigate the potential impacts of concrete failure."
