Augmented Reality Technology Adoption in KFU Scientific Environment

e-Science Developing using Augmented Reality Technology

Description

The Deanship of E-Learning and Information Technology at King Faisal University has produced the Augmented Reality Technology via developing (KFU AR) application on mobile devices, which uses Augmented Reality techniques to display scientific elements in a three-dimensional digital way that simulates reality and can be used to cover practical fields aspects and provide them in easy ways. At a lower cost, especially in medical scientific colleges such as medicine, science, pharmacy, and applied medical sciences, and presenting them in easy ways that allow students to view the educational elements in all their details and interact with them in a way that simulates reality, which contributes to the development of students’ scientific thinking skills.

Replicability

King Faisal University took the lead in using augmented reality technology in the educational field in the Arab region, including the Gulf region. King Faisal University gained great experience in the process of benefiting from this technology in the educational process, and maximizing the benefit from its application in laboratories and scientific laboratories, which contributed to Reducing the financial costs necessary to purchase such giant and accurate models, it also contributed to reducing the risks that could occur to students or the laboratory during the examination, disassembly, and assembly of large-sized medical and mechanical items.
King Faisal University welcomes the transfer of this experience to other universities and institutions that wish to adopt or create similar applications.

Sustainability

The institutional sustainability component is relied upon in the management of the KFU AR project, where the Deanship of E-Learning and Information Technology within KFU which is responsible for managing and operating this Technology, it receives KFU high management support as a strategic project in KFU, hiring specialized resources with high skills and capabilities, where introductory workshops for the deanships, faculties and departments of the university, and local community is being hold periodically, this includes introducing Augmented Realty technology and the necessity of using it in the educational and training process inside and outside the university.
This was reflected in positive responses from several colleges and deanships, as follows:
- Increase in colleges for benefiting from the use of AR technology.
- The trend towards using augmented reality technology in teaching university courses, which saves a lot of expenses related to the sector of establishing laboratories and laboratories at the university.
KFU also works on the sustainability of the project through:
• Increased medical and engineering elements.
• Adding new scientific specializations.
• Adapting to new requirements and expansions in all areas of training and education.
The university has obtained the accreditation certificate for the ISO system in business continuity, as well as the ISO certificate for the information security management system. In addition, it has achieved an external audit rate of 88.99% for the application of basic cybersecurity controls to protect the technical environment of the project. It has also established the Department of Risk Management and Business Continuity, which is directly linked to the first official, and the organizational guide for enterprise risk management was approved in accordance with the ISO system in risk management.

WSIS values promotion

At KFU, we believe that community engagement is a key role of the university. One of the services that we provide to the community is education in all its shapes and forms. We exploit our highly qualified human resources to teach and train people who are not attending the university in all different disciplines. The aspiration of quality education in all academic programs at KFU is clarified in their mission and goals. Some key features of KFU academic programs that demonstrate the quality of education are: Providing students with professional, employability, and personal knowledge and competence for effective contribution to the local community. The “futuristic education” mission component of KFU has framed teaching future-ready skills that employers want and need. Learning and teaching methodologies that are research driven and have significant practical community and service-learning integration. Methodologies are fostered such as the PBL and service learning of the medical programs, the cooperative training of the computer science, business, science, agriculture and education programs and the use of full digital technologies in delivery approaches across programs. King Faisal University was one of the first institutions to make all academic programs have collaborations with industry sectors that provide a way to transform classroom learning into workplace learning. Striving to obtain local and international accreditation for comparison and good reputation.
