Uniform Anti-plagiarism System

Description

The Uniform Anti-plagiarism System (JSA) is used by academic supervisors to ensure that theses have not been plagiarised. The system is available free of charge to all Polish higher education institutions that are authorized to grant professional titles and academic degrees.

JSA has been designed to protect copyrights and prevent unfair competition among students.

The system detects text tampering, including microspaces and letters from non-Latin alphabets, expressions that have been replaced with their synonymous equivalents and those that have been added to the already copied and pasted text passages.

JSA compares submitted theses to those stored in the largest Polish dissertation repositories and to texts available on the Internet.

When portions of text are identified as containing plagiarism, alerts and notifications are triggered, notifying supervisors of potential frauds.

JSA is compatible with a variety of text file formats.

The system ensures identical algorithm standards in every institution.

JSA meets the WCAG requirements, which means it is friendly to the visually impaired and color-blind people.

All system functionalities are available to academic staff only. Students can, however, use the limited version to check whether their theses are plagiarism-free.

JSA serves as support tool to nearly 350 higher education institutions in Poland.

Replicability

The solutions applied in JSA are both scalable and replicable. To date the system has been utilized by over 47,000 supervisors at nearly 375 higher education institutions to scan over 1.7 million theses and dissertations, with each of these numbers growing every year.

The system conforms to the standards set by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, ensuring adherence to all professional, legal, and ethical requirements.

As the architect of the system, the National Information Processing Institute, is open and ready to share its knowledge and experiences with public and private entities seeking to replicate the system and committed to ensuring equitable rules for students who pursue their academic degrees and titles.

Sustainability

The system's design and architecture prioritize interoperability with the existing large databases and document formats, promoting seamless integration into diverse educational environments. Compatibility with various languages ensures applicability across a multitude of academic landscapes.

Regular updates and responsiveness to evolving plagiarism tactics underscore the system's adaptability, while sharing insights on the system's performance metrics and continuous improvement efforts enhance its credibility.

Collaboration with academic communities and feedback mechanisms contribute to the responsiveness and resilience of the system. This engenders trust, which is the key component of long-term sustainability.

WSIS values promotion

With the rapid advance of digital technologies and digital literacy it is essential to counter the misuse and abuse of digital technologies. JSA has been designed to combat plagiarism in theses and dissertation and ensure equal opportunities in the domain of higher education, contributing to a fairer and more inclusive society.
