KoboToolbox

Description

KoboToolbox is an open source data collection platform used globally in humanitarian action, development, environmental protection, peacebuilding, and human rights. KoboToolbox was designed to collect high quality data even in the most challenging environments. Using KoboToolbox’s intuitive interface and easily customizable forms, users can collect data online or offline, with mobile devices or web forms.
Quickly collecting reliable information in a crisis is critical to effectively responding to the needs of affected communities, especially in under-resourced areas. Effective and high quality data collection is often most critically needed in areas with limited resources, offline settings, or humanitarian and development projects. Traditional paper-based data collection methods and manual data entry can be time consuming, error prone, and difficult to manage.
Many local organizations have limited formal training in data collection and insufficient resources to hire specialists. As a result, organizations working most closely with local communities often do not have access to the tools and skills that would support them to work most effectively.
KoboToolbox provides a digital solution for data collection that is accessible to everyone and supports sustainable development by empowering local organizations with quality data collection tools. It works offline, on any device, and enables more efficient data collection, management, and visualization. With features like skip logic, validation, and multimedia inputs, users can efficiently capture quality data even in low-resource settings. The platform enables secure data synchronization, visualization, and analysis, supporting more informed decision-making and project evaluation. By streamlining data processes, KoboToolbox empowers organizations around the world with high quality data, so they can make an even greater impact on the ground.

Replicability

"Since its launch in 2014, KoboToolbox has experienced remarkable growth, with over 400 million surveys collected and 700,000 users worldwide. KoboToolbox is used on a global scale, with users collecting more than 20 million surveys per month in 240 countries and territories across the world.

KoboToolbox continues to expand its accessibility to users by adding more languages to our user interface. We will continue to grow and support our user base by developing online courses, including advanced courses in form building and data collection. Online courses will also be translated into multiple languages. The launch of a training-of-trainers program will further support access to KoboToolbox to users around the world who can then provide support and training in their local communities.

New features are continuously developed and added to the platform to meet the evolving needs of our users. Recently developed features include additional security measures for survey data, automated qualitative data analysis methods, automatic transcription and translation using natural language processing technology, and case management.

Features for improved project oversight and user management are currently being developed to better support the data collection needs of large organizations. These features include enhanced custom password policies, access logs, and mandatory single sign-on."

WSIS values promotion

"As the most widely used primary data collection tool in the nonprofit sector, KoboToolbox is the tool of choice for over 14,000 social impact organizations implementing projects worldwide. In virtually every country around the world, KoboToolbox is used by organizations working in humanitarian action, global development, environmental protection, peacebuilding, and human rights. In 2022, KoboToolbox received a total of 206 million survey submissions, with over 515,000 new survey projects created. Currently, KoboToolbox has more than 700,000 users globally and collects over 20 million surveys a month. To start collecting data with KoboToolbox, users can create a free KoboToolbox account on the public server: https://kf.kobotoolbox.org, where they can customize and design survey forms according to their specific data collection needs using the Formbuilder, XLSForm, templates, or library of assets. Users can configure the settings for their data collection project, including sharing permissions, project metadata, and data collection method (online or offline). Survey forms are deployed to the intended enumerators or field workers who can collect data using mobile devices with the KoboCollect mobile app or web browsers. The collected data is then synced to the KoboToolbox server, in real time if connected to the internet or as soon as a connection is available. Users can review, edit, and analyze the data by leveraging the built-in visualization tools, exporting to external analysis tools, or using available integrations with other software. With the data and analysis produced by KoboToolbox, users can easily generate reports and share findings with stakeholders."
