She Goes Digital

Description

She Goes Digital is a program that seeks to provide digital skills training to adolescent girls and young women in the rural parts of Kakamega Kenya to enable them to earn an income working in the digital market.

Our approach is providing in-person training to adolescent girls and young women in our community hub, and also providing free access to computers and internet connection so they can continue practicing and also use the hub as a working space.

So far we have trained 160 girls and young women, and 30 out of this number have been able to get jobs and income as a result of the training.

Replicability

This project has the potential to be scaled up by having more community hubs that will ensure more women receive digital skills training, and also have a working space for those who work remotely, which is the nature of work for most digital jobs.

The solution can also be scaled up by being replicated in other rural communities in Kenya and even in East Africa because there are similar problems relating to the gender digital divide, unemployment, and high levels of poverty among young women and girls.

The solution can also be scaled up by translating the program into local languages to ensure the inclusion of young women and girls who do not necessarily understand English, thereby ensuring they also get access to the training. All that is needed is working with trainers and educators who understand the specific local languages to help curate the training curriculum in that local community's language.

Sustainability

"She Goes Digital" contributes to sustainability by equipping adolescent girls and young women with skills that are relevant to the evolving digital landscape. The provision of free access to computers and the establishment of a community hub create a sustainable learning environment. The success stories of participants securing jobs indicate the potential for the program's ongoing impact and sustainability as it continues to bridge the digital skills gap for women in rural areas.

WSIS values promotion

Digital Skills Training: - Empowers adolescent girls and young women with digital skills, contributing to the community's goal of promoting digital literacy and inclusion. - Addresses gender digital divide issues by providing training opportunities specifically for young women. Community Hub: - Offers a physical space with computers and internet access, contributing to creating a hub for digital activities and fostering a supportive learning environment. Employment Opportunities: - The program's success in helping 30 participants secure jobs and income demonstrates its contribution to creating employment opportunities in the digital sector.
