Tackling Ethical Dimensions of Online Media Content through Self-Regulation

Description

About 100 news websites operating in Rwanda represent more than the total number of newspapers, radio and TV stations combined. Rwanda Media Commission (RMC), responsible for Media Self-Regulation, developed strategies dealing with professional and ethical issues related to online media. Five key activities identified: Regular monitoring to identify ethical and professional gaps, conversations with editors where ethical gaps have been identified, regular group meetings with web owners and editors, handling complaints from public, disseminating principles of Code of Ethics. Common issues identified: violations of privacy, nudity, and graphic depiction of violence. RMC have already handled 10 cases so far.
