China Unicom - Intelligent Network Digital Innovation Project

Description

Intelligent Network Digital Innovation Project builds on the idea that to encourage the adoption of ICTs to improve and extend health care and health information systems to remote and underserved areas and vulnerable populations, and to strength and expand ICT-based initiatives for providing medical and humanitarian assistance in disasters and emergencies.

The promises of ultra-high bandwidth, ultra-low latency, and massive connections of 5G have the potential to empowers the realm of medicine and can help transform how healthcare is delivered. 5G network operation and maintenance (O&M); there are, however, complex structural problems and challenges that cannot be addressed by traditional O&M methods. Intelligent Network Digital Innovation Project, featuring AI power and big data, aims to promote 5G intelligent O&M to help healthcare organizations meet the growing demands of digital transformation. Specifically, for people in rural areas, where doctors are located several miles away, travelling whilst ill can be challenging and time consuming. The challenge of lack of network operation skills in the remote and marginalized districts can also be resolved.

In the context of COVID-19, this project accelerates the growth of remote medicine. It supported real-time high-quality video for thousands national remote consultations and hundreds of international medical analysis and diagnosis.

Replicability

The strategy of the Intelligent Network Digital Innovation Project is to conduct innovations and pilots in certain regions and replicate across the country. Until now, 37 innovative applications have been developed and replicated to 31 provinces in China, covering 1.35 million base stations and 320 million subscribers.

Sustainability

This project aligns to the foundation of digital transformation model. It shall not only change the mindset of 300,000 employees and managers, but also the operational changes to the network industry and ecosystem. The digital transformation of China Unicom can greatly impact all aspects of life and society.
5G, the next telecommunication revolution, is advancing irresistibly. The introduction of new 5G technology architecture and service diversity brings challenges to the traditional O&M:
• 5G services come with various Quality of Service requirements and differentiated service assurance.
• The co-existence of 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G caused a structural dilemma in the telecommunication industry.
This project provides centralized monitoring, fault root cause analysis, performance data analysis, automatic O&M and closed-loop control to effectively address challenges to network’s O&M, reduce O&M costs, and guarantee the sustainability of 5G development.

WSIS values promotion

This project seeks to encourage the adoption of ICTs to improve and extend health care and health information systems to remote underserved areas and vulnerable populations, and to strengthen and expand ICT-based initiatives for providing medical and humanitarian assistance in disasters and emergencies.
