GIRLS IN ICT DAY, DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA
International Girls in ICT Day is an initiative backed by ITU Member States in ITU Plenipotentiary Resolution 70 (Guadalajara, 2010) to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of information and communication technologies (ICTs). International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated on the 4th Thursday in April every year.
For the first time Computing and Information Association (CIA) in collaboration with TANZICT, KINU and UNESCO National commission under financial sponsorship from Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA) organized the girls in ICT day event.
With the massage "Girls embracing ICT " the commemoration of Girls in ICT Day 2013 started with a trip visit on 24th April whereby 48 girls from six secondary schools ( Loyola, Jangwani, Tambaza, Benjamin Mkapa, Zanaki and Makongo secondary school) accompanied by project team and their teachers visited ICT companies and organizations such as UhuruOne, SEACOM, SIMBANET,TZNIC, STARTIMES, Vodacom Tanzania and TCRA, to see what kind of workplaces they are, and how can ICT companies also be of interest to women. After the company visits, everyone met at the KINU Hub for lunch and working on presentation about the visit for conference next day.
The official Girls in ICT Day, April 25th 2013, was held at COSTECH Building in a conference format with over 160 girls from different secondary schools and young women students from universities were present. There were 4 keynote speakers, 8 motivational speakers - women who have already achieved a lot in ICT in Tanzania and other invited guests.
The guest of honor was Prof. Nkoma who is a Director General of TCRA; he opened the ceremony by providing an opening speech followed by presentations from Dr. Hassan Mshinda, Director General, Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), Madam Kristiina Lähde, Chief Technical Adviser, TANZICT and Mr John Poul from KINU.
There after students from each group presented on what they learnt in their field trip, followed by group discussion with their role models and followed by basic computer skills trainings.
At the end, Eng. Mulamula, Chief Executive Officer, Dar es Salaam Technohama Business Incubator (DTBI) presented followed by Prof. Elizabert Kiondo, Executive director, UNESCO National Commission who presented her closing remarks and all participant were provided with certificates of participation.
