ITU Interactive Terrestrial Transmission Maps (Thursday, 3 April 2014, 13:30 - 14:15, Room D)
During this event, ITU presented the main features of the web-based ITU Interactive Terrestrial Transmission Maps (Optical Fibres and Microwaves). The ITU Interactive Terrestrial Transmission Maps are an authoritative ICT data mapping platform to take stock of national backbone connectivity as well as of other key metrics of the ICT sector. They are displayed in a web map based on United Nations cartography standards, visually locating the optical fibres and microwaves nodes and links on the maps.
The Maps are a great source of data for network planners, policy makers and regulators to assess the status of national connectivity and to identify gaps. They will enable the Industry to assess market opportunities, thus serving as a management tool, and will act for all interested stakeholders as a source of abundant and current data on global ICT connectivity.
These Maps have been created by ITU in collaboration with Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) for Asia-Pacific maps, and with The Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) for Africa maps. Data concerning submarine cables have been provided by TeleGeography. Further partnerships will be established with other national and regional stakeholders for improving the amount and quality of collected data.

Technical Requirements for Large Scale Deployment of eHealth Innovations (Monday, 7 April 2014, 17:45 - 18:30, Room D)
During this session, we shared lessons learnt and best practices from leading technology partners who have a long standing experience in developing and deploying scalable, open, secured and integrated eHealth platforms.
There is strong evidence that smart, innovative solutions, such as mobile technologies can facilitate healthcare, save lives and cut healthcare costs on an unprecedented scale and can make a real difference to people around the world. But while there are many who have already engaged the power of technology to healthcare, current efforts are duplicative and fragmented. This adds both cost and complexity to those buying health services, and limits the market to those selling innovation and the ability of systems to reach scale; the net result is confusion. There is a pressing need to embrace an integrated and holistic approach to deploy scalable eHealth solutions by avoiding a piece-meal approach to systems development and adopting a "Platform" approach that would learn from other sectors to create the "right type" of integration, respecting regulatory boundaries and applying relevant open and shared standards.
