Building the solid foundation for future digital infrastructure based on iPv6 is one of the prerequisites for accelerated and sustainable digital transformation. In 2021, the Government of Montenegro and the Agency for Electronic Communications and Postal Services of Montenegro (EKIP) requested assistance from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in this respect and tasked ITU with:
- The development of a National Workshop of Montenegro on IPv6 strategies, policies, and implementation.
- The organization of a “training of experts" equipping more than 20 professionals in Montenegro on the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 in collaboration with Mirpur University of Science and Technology (MUST).
- The elaboration of an ITU Technical Assistance paper detailing the building blocks for future actions needed at the country level including requirements for the elaboration of the IPv6 laboratory, cost estimations and use cases.
To support this process, an IPv6 Laboratory was created at country level to provide the foundation for educational programmes in third-level education, and re-skilling and upskilling trainings.
Today, ITU and the University of Montenegro are pleased to announce that the inauguration of the IPv6 Laboratory took place on 27 September 2023, at the University of Montenegro in Podgorica.
This event inaugurated the opening of the IPv6 Laboratory in the University of Montenegro under the framework of ITU Europe's Regional Initiative 1: Digital Infrastructure Development - Human Capacity Development and Broadcasting Related Matters.
The IPv6 Lab will support Montenegro in its transition from IPv4 to IPv6. In coordination with the Ministry of Economic Development, the national regulator EKIP, and the University of Montenegro the technical assistance to Montenegro on IPv6 will be focused on preparing the country with the necessary equipment, technical knowledge, and strategic approach to IPv6.
The establishment of the IPv6 Lab is in line with ITU Resolution 180 (Rev. Dubai, 2018), “Facilitating the transition from IPv4 to IPv6" which noted the importance of providing Member States the technical assistance from experts in the deployment of IPv4 and IPv6.
