Question 9/5

Question 9/5 – Generic and product family EMC recommendations for telecommunication equipment
(Continuation of Question 12/5)

Motivation

The telecommunications industry needs EMC recommendations and handbooks which provide key information on the:

  • electromagnetic environment around telecommunication equipment;
  • expected worst case levels impacting equipment in this environment;
  • appropriate laboratory test levels for this equipment to guarantee performance quality;
  • appropriate laboratory test method to simulate the representative application and stimulate the most susceptibility condition of the equipments;
  • mitigation techniques.

This question will provide new EMC recommendations for telecommunications and will determine when the existing documents need updating or amending and ultimately provide guidance on when they can be deleted.

This work contributes to a reduction in climate change by developing specifications that allow equipment to operate within this environment without disturbance. The availability of such equipment avoids the unnecessary replacement of the equipments and system caused by the electromagnetic disturbance. It also reduces the subsequent engineer visit required to resolve the ongoing issue.

The following Recommendations, in force at the time of approval of this Question, fall under its responsibility:

  • K.18, K.23, K.24, K.34, K.37, K.38, K.42, K.43, K.48, K.49, K.63, K.76, K.80 and K.88.

Question

This question will provide new recommendations and will review existing K-series EMC recommendations to ensure that they remain accurate and appropriate to the telecommunications industry and environment. It will ensure that changes in the environment or in technology (for example the application of new radio systems) will produce an update to ensure that these documents remain current and valid. As part of its output this question may highlight further areas of study (for example new technologies) for other questions.
This question may recommend further areas of study.

Study items to be considered include, but are not limited to:

  • EMC requirements for mobile communication system, such as 3G/4G network equipments;
  • EMC requirements for onsite test when the EUT is put into use or starts consuming power;
  • Update EMC requirements below 150 kHz;
  • The inclusion of specific test methods and operating conditions;
  • The specific inclusion of RF active devices;
  • Calculation method for induced voltages in K.18;
  • Immunity recommendation for xDSL equipments in telecommunication network installation;
  • Lightning immunity test method (improve surge tests);
  • Consideration of new EMC environmental characteristics for equipments in telecommunication network installation;
  • Consideration of special EMC environmental characteristics for equipments in telecommunication network installation.

Tasks

Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • A new product family recommendation related to EMC requirements for a wire-line network equipments;
  • A new product family recommendation related to EMC requirements for a radio network equipments;
  • A new product family recommendation related to EMC requirements for a mobile communication system;
  • A new product family recommendation related to EMC requirements for the power feeding system used by telecommunication network installation;
  • A new recommendation related to EMC on site test;
  • Maintenance and enhancement of existing Recommendations to cover new environments;
  • Maintenance and enhancement of existing Recommendations to cover special EMC environment.
