The session will examine some successful online safety education programs operating today - including Amigos Conectados, a digital literacy program in Latin America with a focus on online safety designed to provide teachers, children and families with skills they need to safely take full advantage of the opportunities provided by technologies. The project has been developed by Chicos.net, an established NGO with more than 15 years of expertise in the development of educational programs and promotion of children and teenagers’ rights, and The Walt Disney Company. It uses engaging and attractive characters and other intellectual property from Disney’s Club Penguin, the number one virtual world for children. The program has been delivered in 6 countries in Latin America, through local partners associated with Red Natic - a Latin-American network of NGOs - committed to the promotion of children’s rights with regards to the safe and responsible use of ICT. The materials are available online in Spanish and Portuguese.
The session will contribute to the understanding of the importance of online safety education, in reaching the WSIS goals.

Session's link to the Sustainable Development Process
Concerns about online safety can act as a barrier to the adoption and use of ICTs, and therefore impede advancement of the Information Society. Understanding online safety education programs that have been successful will inform efforts to further advance sustainable development, with respect to the adoption of ICTs and the full inclusion in the digital economy.
