ITU Child Online Protection Global Programme in the CIS Region

The ITU Regional Office for the CIS Region assists the CIS countries in building and developing online safety environment for children.

About ITU COP Global Program

Rapid developments in information and communication technologies offers new opportunities for children to have access online but have also brought risks and challenges to children’s rights. 

In 2020 ITU’s Global Programme “Creating a Safe and Prosperous Cyberspace for Children”​ (COP Global Programme), launched in collaboration and with the support of the National Cybersecurity Authority of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. ​

COP Global Programme is aimed to encourage the development of innovative strategies, provide skills, facilitate international dialogue and strengthen global efforts to implement the ITU Child Online Protection Guidelines, which were updated and published in June 2020.

The overarching goal of the COP Global Programme is to complement the global efforts for implement child online protection policies involving government, industry and civil society through awareness, capacity building, digital skills development and knowledge sharing with all relevant stakeholders, including children and their families. To achieve this goal, a set of measures and programs at the national, regional and international level is being developed for ensure child online safety, as well as equip children with the digital skills and the necessary knowledge to become digitally literate and resilient for themselves and for others.  ​

About the ITU 2020 Child Online Protection Guidelines 

The new COP Guidelines include 4 sets - for policy-makers, industry, parents and educators and children​
  • The Guidelines for policy-makers propose concrete recommendations on how to develop a national strategy on COP, provided with tools to identify key stakeholders to engage with, coordination efforts and alignment with existing national frameworks and strategy plans.
  • The Guidelines for industry include recommendation on developing businesses COP policies and measures and aim at establishing the foundation for safer and more secure use of Internet-based services and associated technologies. 
  • The Guidelines for parents and educators help children`s surroundings by educating, raising awareness about COP and promoting digital skills and digital literacy.   ​
  • The Guidelines for сhildren are designed in a child-friendly and interactive form, presented as a storybook, play cards, workbook&teachers guide and video episodes and provide children how to stay safe online, while they are using computers, phones, tablets, consoles and any other online device.​
