Girls in ICT Day 10 year anniversary

International Girls in ICT Day 2021 will be observed on 22 April 2021. The ITU Office for Europe invites all Member States, Sector Members, Associates, Academia and other stakeholders of the European region to join the global movement to empower girls and young women through ICTs by organizing activities to celebrate the day on and around 22 April 2021. Over the years, Girls in ICT Day was celebrated in more than 170 countries with over 11,000 events worldwide by engaging key stakeholders and partners to inspire girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers through trainings, information sharing, capacity building activities and role models. Adolescent girls with job-specific skills related to STEM – such as engineering, computer programming, cloud technology, robotics, health sciences and technologies – are better equipped to equally and actively participate in changing economies and evolving labour markets. Currently, traditional employment sectors are declining in response to automation, while innovation opens new ones demanding different skills. Without STEM skills – critical thinking, problem-solving and digital skills– girls and women will be further left behind from equal economic and social participation. Visit: International  Girls in ICT Day 2021 website.

Implementation Projects

The EQUALS global partnership was launched in 2016 by the International Telecommunication Union and four founding partners – GSMA, the International Trade Centre, the United Nations University and UN Women – EQUALS contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Agenda through actions and evidence-based research aimed at closing the global gender digital divide. Now made up of more than 90 partners and growing fast, EQUALS uses a multidisciplinary approach that integrates research, policy and programming to promote gender equality in technology access, skills and leadership, as well as conducting ground-breaking, evidence-based research.

EQUALS-EU is part of the EQUALS global partnership for gender equality in the digital age. EQUALS-EU aims to give more women access to technology, digital skills and leadership positions. The ambition is to promote justice and equality, as well as build capacity through multilateral partnerships and create smart, sustainable and inclusive social innovation ecosystems in local communities in the global North and South. The project will help to build gender inclusive innovation ecosystems that can cultivate a new generation of female inventors. It will also address the economic, social and cultural roots of gender inequality that affect education, employment and social life. More specifically, Equals EU will initiate 24 new start-ups led by women.
