The main objectives of ITU-T SG17 Regional Group for Arab Region (SG17RG-ARB) are as follows:
- To act as a platform for the analysis and exchange of information between delegates of Member States, local and regional experts, and to encourage debate and efforts to seek consensus on ICT security challenges;
- To encourage the active participation of Member States, their regulators, Sector Members, and operators of the region in the meetings and work of ITU-T Study Group 17 and SG17RG ARB, as well as in the implementation of ITU-T Recommendations;
- To foster discussion and studies across the region of international telecommunication/ICT to contribute actively to reflect Arab region’s real problems and needs in developing ITU-T security Recommendations; with a view to informing the development of enabling security recommendations and frameworks;
- To assist Arab administrations, regulators, operators, and industries on the implementation of ITU-T Recommendations;
- To report periodically the outcomes and deliverables of ITU-T SG17 and similar technical bodies in order to disseminate and share best practice on security matters;
- To strengthen standard-making capabilities within the Arab region in accordance with WTSA Resolution 44 on "Bridging the Standardization Gap" (Rev. Geneva 2022);
- To identify training needs on ICT security for the operators and regulatory authorities in the region and coordinate the organization of technical tutorials in the region on such topics jointly with ITU-T SG17;
- To encourage discussion and debate, and to work on the region’s security as regards telecommunication services, in accordance with the terms of reference of ITU-T Study Group 17, paying special attention to subjects including: 5G, IoT and ITS security; Cloud computing and big data infrastructure security, metaverse security, and automotive security;
- To encourage the development of new or revised Recommendations and/or appendices and the submission of substantive contributions from the Arab region in traditional and emerging areas of interest for ITU-T Study Group 17 that reflect the interests of the region;
- To strengthen standard-making capabilities within the region in accordance with Resolution 44 on “Bridging the Standardization Gap” (Rev. Geneva 2022);
- To act as liaison between Member States of the Arab region and ITU T Study Group 17 and its other Regional Groups;
- To encourage active participation of Arab administrations, regulators ,operators and industries in SG17 meetings, Rapporteur's meetings, workshops and other ITU-T SG17 events, taking into consideration their limited capabilities to attend SG17 meetings in Geneva;.
