Introduction
The International Telecommunication Union organized a Workshop on the
Next Generation of Content Delivery Network (CDN) in Macao, China, in the afternoon of 17 October 2017, collocated with the ITU-T Study Group 16 meeting (16-27 October 2017).
With the emerging and popularity of the new services such as 4K/8K/VR/AR, live sport events, IoT and holographic interaction, CDN faces issues for accelerating and delivering the dynamic and interactive contents instead of the traditional web services in the future.
Network throughput will increase in magnitude, resulting in the contradiction between the network cost exponential increase and the end user access price smooth growth.
It will be difficult to cover the magnitude gap between throughputs and cost relying on pure underlay, next generation of CDN solving backbone traffic convergence and improving end user experience is required as necessary approach to fix the gap and accelerate the new emerging services.
Objectives
This workshop brought together CDN stakeholders such as carriers, vendors, ISPs and content providers to discuss the drivers, requirements, challenges, business and tech innovation of future CDN, especially facing the emerging of 4k/8k/VR/AR, IoT and holographic interaction.
The objectives included:
- to discuss driving force, requirements and key challenges of future CDN;
- to discuss potential CDN technology innovation topics;
- to discuss potential CDN business model requiring collaboration;
- to identify technology & standardization gaps;
- to get consensus on initiation of future CDN requirements and technologies study.
Target Audience
ITU Member States, CDN Industry stakeholders including Content providers, OTT players, CDN Service Providers, Carriers, Telcos, also experts who are interested in CDN from other Orgs.
