IMT-2000: The global standard for Third Generation Wireless Communications IMT-2000 are defined by a set of interdependent ITU Recommendations. International Mobile Telecommunications-2000, also known as the Third Generation Mobile Systems, will fulfil one's dream of making anywhere, anytime communications a reality.
Scheduled service starts at around year 2001. As a strategic priority of ITU, IMT-2000 provides a framework for worldwide wireless access by linking the diverse system of terrestrial and/or satellite based networks. It will exploit the potential synergy between the digital mobile telecommunications technologies and those systems for Fixed Wireless Access
(FWA)/Wireless Access Systems (WAS).
ITU-T Special Study Group "IMT- 2000 and beyond" Responsible for studies relating to network aspects of International Mobile Telecommunications 2000 (IMT-2000) and beyond, including wireless Internet, convergence of mobile and fixed networks, mobility management, mobile multimedia functions, internetworking, interoperability and enhancements to existing ITU-T Recommendations on IMT-2000.
