Using single persistent identifiers in a typical IoT network could pose a privacy risk. Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) are one possible way of resolving some of these potential associated privacy risks. DIDs are designed to be independent of a central issuing identity provider that creates and controls the identifier. Instead, DIDs are created and managed by the identity-owner. However, DIDs alone do not suffice, as they do need additional mechanisms for identity information management. In a typical IoT setup where devices can have constrained resources/capabilities, it might be necessary to assess the feasibility of this solution in such cases.-
This draft Technical Report provides a study on the feasibility of DIDs if applied in IoT environments. More specifically, this draft Technical Report covers the followings:
- Overview of the privacy implications of the use of persistent identifiers in IoT environments;
- Different solutions for addressing privacy related threats in IoT setups using persistent identifiers with a focus on W3C DID Specifications as a possible promising technology;
- Feasibility of deploying DIDs in IoT devices (including constrained and non-constrained scenarios);
- Investigation of approaches that would enable the use of DIDs in IoT devices and its relationships with ongoing work related to DIDs in ITU-T SG20 (if applicable - depending on the results of the feasibility study).
