Summary: Urban planners are faced with daunting questions as to whether to promote cities as drivers of economic growth or pay heed to issues such as increasing population, resource overuse and dependence in cities. To assist urban stakeholders in making informed decisions on the sustainable urbanization front, it important to develop a generic pathway for cities to become smart and sustainable. This pathway will not only provides the benefit for sustained economic growth but will also ensures a high quality of life for the citizens along with environmental sustainability within cities. As ITU-T SG 20 is working to address the standardization requirements of IoT in smart cities, it is proposed to establish a new work item on the Smart sustainable cities: a guide for city leaders, to help facilitate the work of the SG20
