BACKGROUND

The Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has been developing a set of documents and tools to help policymakers and professionals make weighed decisions on telecommunication infrastructure development. These tools include ITU Interactive Transmission Maps, Giga broadband calculation tool, Infrastructure Business Planning Toolkit, the Last-mile Internet Solutions Guide. They can help to identify connectivity gaps, estimate demand, calculate connection costs, evaluate broadband infrastructure deployment plans, and select connectivity solutions.

Objective

The session is organized to introduce ITU infrastructure tools to policymakers and professionals, facilitate practical usage of tools in the region and encourage professionals to contribute into tools development.

2. Giga broadband calculation tool is an online tool which is used to estimate the bandwidth needs (in Mbit/s) and costs of connecting schools to a broadband network by different connection technologies. The calculations are based on the school data (number of users and locations) and infrastructure data from ITU Interactive Transmission Maps and other sources.
