The Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States will be held from 1 to 4 September 2014 in Apia, Samoa, to be preceded by activities related to the conference from 28 to 30 August 2014, also in Apia, Samoa. It will focus the world’s attention on a group of countries that remain a special case for sustainable development in view of their unique and particular vulnerabilities.
The overarching theme of the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States is "The sustainable development of small island developing States through genuine and durable partnerships".

Objectives of the Conference

The Conference will seek to achieve the following objectives:
  • assess the progress made to date and identify gaps in implementing the objectives set at the
    2nd International Conference on SIDS which was held in 2005;
  • seek a renewed political commitment by focusing on practical and pragmatic actions for further implementation;
  • identify new and emerging challenges and opportunities for the sustainable development of SIDS and means of addressing them; and
  • Identify priorities for the sustainable development of SIDS to be considered in the elaboration of the post-2015 sustainable development agenda for SIDS..

2014-07-07_16-01-33.jpgSide events sponsored by Governments, UN system and other Inter-governmental Organizations, and Major Groups, will be organized during the UN Conference on SIDS. The side events will allow space for sharing experiences and provide alternative opportunities for dialogue. ITU in partnership with the Government of Samoa through the Office of the Regulator is organising four events at the 3rd international conference for SIDS. ITU is also organizing joint events with other UN agencies.

Small Island Developing States will also benefit from a high profile at ITU Telecom World 2014, ITU's flagship event and the leading platform for strategic debate, networking, innovation-showcasing and knowledge-sharing for the global ICT community. Held this year in Doha, Qatar, from 7 – 10 December, ITU Telecom World will bring together high level representatives from government, regulatory bodies, consultants, academics and the entire ICT industry to debate the current transformation of the sector and explore potential scenarios of the future. On the showfloor, National Pavilions and Industry Stands from around the world will showcase technologies, projects and investment and partnership potential. ITU will host a Thematic Pavilion on Emergency and Disaster Management as well as a SIDS zone dedicated to showcasing the specific profile and potential of Small Island Developing States before the event's uniquely influential audience.
