The main objective of this session is to consider the use case and architecture options for retail Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). Some of this issues that need to be addressed by Central Banks are whether cash and commercial bank deposits would be exchangeable for a CBDC at a 1:1 ratio, whether or not a CBDC would be interest bearing and whether to issue the digital currency directly or via commercial banks. The session will also consider the architecture options for both account or token based CBDCs. The example of Tunisia’s pilot project on Retail CBDC will be discussed as a demonstration of how these issues have been approached in-market.
