Joint ITU/MWF Webinar "Combating Counterfeit and Irregular Mobile Devices: How to address the Problem"

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in collaboration with the Mobile & Wireless Forum organised the Joint ITU/MWF Webinar “Combating Counterfeit and Irregular Mobile Devices: How to address the Problem” which took place virtually on 31 May 2021 from 15h00-18h15 CEST, Geneva time.

Background
Counterfeit and irregular mobile devices deprive governments of significant revenue, cause loss and damage to brand owners and provide consumers with poorer quality devices and experiences than would be expected.

Counterfeit mobile phones and accessories are a multi-billion dollar business controlled by organized crime. While developing countries and emerging markets have long been the primary market for fake devices, the proliferation of e-commerce has also increased the sales of counterfeits and fakes worldwide, making it a truly global issue. In this regard, standardization activities to combat counterfeiting have become of major interest within many Member States and there are several encouraging measures that have been successfully implemented already.

Thus, this webinar focused on such successful implementation projects. Presentations were given by experts actively involved in the implementation phases and processes of these projects. According to WTSA Resolution 90 (WTSA-16) “Open source in the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector”, ITU welcomes collaboration on open-source projects including those related to combating counterfeiting.

The ITU and the Mobile & Wireless Forum (MWF) invited all interested parties to discuss use cases to tackle the counterfeiting of mobile devices.

The webinar therefore provided an overview of ITU-T SG11 activities on combating counterfeiting, presented a geographically diverse overview of the different use cases and also discussed potential open-source solutions to address these issues.

Target Audience
ITU and MWF members and non-members were invited. Whether attendees have dealt with anti-counterfeiting measures before or whether they are new to the topic, this joint webinar held insights for everyone interested in the subject. Participation was free of charge.

Remote connection
The connection was provided via ZOOM. Registration was mandatory to access the event.
