His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta
President of the Republic of Kenya

In recognition of outstanding achievements in the communications sector, we are proud to present President Uhuru Kenyatta with the ICTs in Sustainable Development Award.

Acceptance remarks

In recent years, Kenya has become a model for ICT adaption and proliferation in Africa, boasting a broad range of initiatives and policies, and ensuring a connected and sustainable future. In 2013, a National ICT Master Plan was established, laying out a blueprint for key developments in Kenya’s communications sector. In addition, a new regulatory framework, the Science, Technology, and Innovation Act, was introduced in order to facilitate innovation and research. In 2014, the first National Innovation Forum was held with the aim of developing ICT innovation and realizing goals established by the ICT Master Plan. Alongside job creation and economic development, Kenya has prioritized accessibility in recognition of information as a national asset. The Kenya Open Data Initiative, launched in 2011, has made government data freely available to the public through digital databases. Kenya has also prioritized education and digital literacy. The National Digital Literacy Programme, unveiled earlier this year, aims to provide all public primary schools with a range of ICT devices. Kenya Power, a national energy company, is expanding its electricity grid to reach farther, bringing connectivity to 70 per cent of primary schools. With all of these elements combined, Kenya has approved an ambitious project called: Konza Techno City: a technology park aimed at the promotion of technology innovation. This project is a prime component of the Kenya Vision 2030, a national development programme covering the period from 2008 to 2030.

In recognition of outstanding leadership and initiative, it is our honour to present His Excellency Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta, President of the Republic of Kenya, with the ICTs in Sustainable Development Award.
